What is a caesarean section?
A cesarean section, also known as a caesarean section, is a procedure in which a doctor delivers the baby through an incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus instead of through the vagina.
Some doctors refer to this as abdominal delivery.
Some women prefer to have elective caesarean section or cesarean section on maternal request (CDMR). However, most C-sections occur when natural childbirth poses a risk of serious harm to the mother or baby.
Under what circumstances is it necessary to perform a cesarean section?
Caesarean section is performed when natural childbirth is dangerous.
A cesarean section may be medically necessary for the following reasons:
Natural childbirth does not progress.
Multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets, have occurred.
The fetus has an emergency or serious health concern.
The fetus has hydrocephalus or excess fluid on the brain.
The fetus is in the breech or transverse position.
The baby is too big to pass through the cervix.
The mother has a contagious virus such as herpes or HIV that can be transmitted to the baby during normal delivery.
The mother has complex conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
The mother has a uterine disease or a fibroid blocking the cervix.
The placenta or umbilical cord has abnormalities.
The mother has previously given birth by caesarean section.
C-sections may also occur by choice of the mother. According to one source in 2017, each individual may choose an elective caesarean section for complex reasons, such as:
Fear of pain during childbirth or anxiety about natural childbirth
Previous experience
Interaction with health professionals
A wide range of social influences, including the media, friends and family
A sense of control over the birthing process
Caesarean section is a special procedure that requires a longer recovery process than natural childbirth. Choose an elective C-section only when your doctor gives you a clear picture of the risks.
